Middle Temple, London
The building on the left is Middle Temple Hall seen across Fountain Court from Middle Temple Lane. Middle Temple Hall is open to the public only at certain times of day. When we went in June 2010 those times were 10:00 - 11:30 AM and 3:00 - 4:00 PM Monday to Friday only.

The interior of Middle Temple Hall, which was built between 1560 and 1580, contains one of the finest examples of a double-hammer beam roof in the UK.
The first performance of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night is recorded as having taken place here in February 1602. Luckily it survived the Great Fire of London apparently because of a sudden change in the direction of the wind.

Middle Temple Lane runs from Fleet Street down to the Victoria Embankment.
There are numerous passages and courtyards leading off this lane which can make things a little confusing as we discovered. Near the lower end there is St. Clements Cafe and Wine Bar which is open to the public and we enjoyed a lunch there.

Part of Middle Temple Garden seen from near the north-east corner of Middle Temple Hall. The River Thames and Victoria Embankment are just out of sight beyond the red brick building.
This garden was the venue for the first Chelsea Flower Show, known then as the London Flower Show) in the late 1800s.
