The Road Bridge, Hay-on-Wye, Brecknockshire, Wales, Great Britain
Hay-on-Wye.

There are two River Wye crossings at Hay-on-Wye of which this modern road bridge is one. It cannot be said to be attractive but it is functional and it is free. I say that because the only other river bridge here is a toll bridge.

The Toll Bridge, Hay-on-Wye, Brecknockshire, Wales, Great Britain
Hay-on-Wye.

The Whitney Toll Bridge is a privately owned bridge. The first bridge on this site was built around 1780 following authorisation by Act of Parliament and was a stone structure of five bays. That bridge and two successors of similar design were all destroyed by flooding on the river the last being in 1795. The current bridge was built in 1797 of stone and wood.

It now has an automatic barrier where users must pay a toll.

A Slow Worm, Hay-on-Wye, Brecknockshire, Wales, Great Britain
Hay-on-Wye.

We spotted this Slow Worm on the river path. We could hardly have missed it as it moved slowly across the path in front of us. For those of you that don't know; a Slow Worm is a legless lizard and is not a snake. It is completely harmless.
