Bridport (3), Dorset

This view is from near the Burton Cliffs showing the bay with the two blocks of East Cliff at West Bay in the distance. Beyond East Cliff is West Bay harbour and more of the Dorset coast including Golden Cap.

Burton Cliff near Burton Bradstock, Bridport. The obvious hard and soft bands make these cliffs unstable so stay well away. This section of beach should be walked only when the tide is going out so that you are not obliged to walk close to the cliffs.

Between East Cliff and Burton Cliff is where the River Bride at Burton Freshwater runs into the sea. The river here is only ankle deep so that you can choose to paddle through it or you can follow the path across the grassy area away from the beach until you find the bridge and then return to the beach.

The cliffs here are unstable as you can see from this recent cliff fall although nothing happened whilst I was walking along the beach and it was a very pleasant walk indeed. This beach is actually the western end of Chesil Beach which extends east as far as the Isle of Portland.
This is a good reason for not walking close to the cliffs.

Some of the rocks are very fossiliferous with shells, such as oyster, and belemnites - the little grey things scattered around. Both sections of cliff are Lower Jurassic Bridport Sand.
