Cardiff Bay, Cardiff, Glamorgan

There is a Water Bus service from Bute Park to Cardiff Bay which provides a pleasant trip with some nice views.

We used it to travel to Cardiff Bay and were very happy with the service. There are two different companies running services and a boat leaves every 30 minutes.

The Pierhead Building, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales, Great Britain.
Cardiff Bay, Cardiff, Glamorgan

The Pierhead Building, one of Cardiff's most familiar landmarks, was built in 1897 and was the headquarters for the Bute Dock Company.

The Pierhead includes details such as hexagonal chimneys, carved friezes, gargoyles, and a highly ornamental and distinctive clock tower whose exterior is finished in glazed terracotta blocks supplied by J. C. Edwards & Co. of Acrefair, near Ruabon. That company was once described as one of the most successful producers of terracotta in the world.

Formerly a Church for Norwegian Sailors this distinctive and iconic building dates back to the industrial revolution when Cardiff Docks were the world's greatest exporter of coal.

This building is no longer used as a church but is now an Art Centre and Cafe.

The Cardiff Bay Barrage, Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales, Great Britain.
Cardiff Bay, Cardiff.

In 1980 the government decided to revitalise the largely-derelict Cardiff docklands. However the tidal nature of Cardiff Bay, exposing extensive mudflats at low tide, was seen as aesthetically unappealing. A barrage stretching across the mouth of Cardiff Bay was proposed, which would impound freshwater from the rivers Ely and Taff to create a large freshwater lake, providing permanent high water and was completed in 1999.

This is the view along the barrage with Penarth in the distance, the enclosed bay on the right and the sea on the left.
