Abbey Wood (1), London
Abbey Wood is south of the Thames about a mile and a half south-east of Woolwich. Lesnes Abbey at Abbey Wood was built in the 12th century and this is all that's left. Although the ruins are fairly extensive there is not a lot of the structure showing above ground.

This view, looking south, shows a small part of the Lesnes Abbey ruins with the Canary Wharf (Docklands) buildings showing on the horizon.

Abbey Wood is so called because, well, it has an abbey and a wood; what more could you want?
It is a very nice wood with lots of paths and wild flowers and, at the top of the hill, there is an area of heath.

We spotted this on our walk round the wood and, for a minute, I thought I was looking in a mirror. I believe that there are other carvings but we didn't spot any.
