12th century crypt, St. John's Church, Clerkenwell, London, England, Great Britain
The Order of St. John, Clerkenwell.

From St. John's Gate go north across the Clerkenwell Road and on the other side you should see the headquarters of the Order of St. John. It is a modern building but go inside and there you will find the entrance to the 12th century crypt which is part of the Priory Church of St. John.

This view is from the entrance looking towards the altar.

Side Chapels, 12th century crypt, St. John's Church, Clerkenwell, London, England, Great Britain

At the far end of the crypt there are two side chapels. This is the view from one side chapel looking past the altar to the other side chapel. Just below the window at the far end is a strange effigy.

This effigy of a decaying corpse in a shroud is the one mentioned in the previous picture. Nice!
