Devonshire Square is where the old East India Tea Company had their warehouses and when the buildings were redeveloped for modern use, they left the old fire bell and some of the other buildings as they had been in the 17th century.

In the late 17th century insurance companies began to appear because of building fires and early fire brigades also began to appear. This was followed in the early 18th century by the rise of fire marks. These were essential markers for the insurance companies and as soon as a premium was signed, someone would nail a fire mark to the front of the building to show that it was insured.
This is one such fire mark spotted high on a wall in Devonshire Square.
