Cheddar Gorge, Cheddar, Somerset

A panoramic view from the highest point of the gorge, on the southern side, looking south-west across the Somerset Levels.
The Cheddar Reservoir can be seen on the right which is supplied with water from the River Yeo in Cheddar Gorge.

When on top of the gorge the bottom is a long way down so take care near the edge; the cliffs of the gorge reach 400 feet, and more, at their highest.

We saw a lot of this Devil's Bit Scabious (Succisa pratensis) along the top of the gorge. This pretty wild flower is restricted in its distribution and so is not always easy to find but up here you can't miss it.

Down in the gorge those impressive limestone cliffs tower above us. The road is rather shiny because we'd had a thunderstorm on our way down with very heavy rain and the road surface is very wet.

The road winds its way through the gorge and there are some sharp bends so don't let them take you by surprise. Also bear in mind that at one point, near here, the gorge and road is not wide enough for two vehicles to pass.
There are obvious places where cars may be parked. Some are free and some are chargeable.
