Broadway (3), Worcestershire, England

This is Broadway's original Church dating from the 12th century and is about one mile out of Broadway near Broadway Court on the Snowshill Road.
As Broadway grew it was decided that a new church would be better nearer the village and so this one was replaced by the Victorian church in the village.

We noticed these steps by the church gate and thought that, perhaps, they were meant to be used for a mounting block for people on horseback. But then we noticed an identical set of steps on the other side of the wall.

These are the identical set of steps on the other side of the wall. We have not seen anything like it before in other churches. It appears to be a way for people to get into and out of the churchyard without opening the gate or perhaps the gate didn't exist then.
The steps have obviously had a lot of use - notice how worn some of them are but their exact purpose remains a mystery to us at the moment.
