The fairly steep Market Hill climbs up, from the River Blackwater, past colour-washed houses to the Maeldune Centre at the top where it forms a junction with the High Street.

Built of flint and stone All Saints Church is unique because of its 12th Century triangular tower.
The vicar of Purleigh Church, Lawrence Washington, who was the great, great grandfather of George Washington, first president of the United States, is buried here.

Thames Sailing Barges, with their distinctive red ochre sails, have unusual names such as 'Hydrogen', 'Repertor', 'Thistle' and 'Reminder'. Visitors are able to take trips on a number of these barges which include both day trips and trips which include overnight stays.
Once the East Coast's traditional cargo vessel, at the turn of the century the fleet numbered over 2,000, today only a handful survive.
