Winchester (2), Hampshire
This view along the little alley, Royal Oak Passage, that runs from the High Street down the side of God Begot House to St. George's Street shows the construction of this wonderful half-timbered building.
The jettied construction is easily seen.

This is also known as the City Cross. Immediately to the right of the cross is an archway and narrow passage leading to Great Minster Street and the cathedral precincts.
It was once used by countrymen as a place to sell produce; hence the name.

The Medieval West Gate dominates the upper end of the High Street and is located close to the Great Hall. It is one of two surviving fortified gateways in Winchester.
There is a museum on the upper floor and there is also access to the roof for a view over the High Street.
