Carreg Cennan Castle (1), Carmarthenshire

This must be one of the most spectacular settings of any castle that we have seen. Set in the middle of nowhere with the only approach by narrow back lanes this is one of the views that we encountered on our approach.
The nearest town is Llandeilo and the nearest village is Trapp (sometimes spelled 'Trap') but you will need either some instructions on how to get there or a good map in order to find it. It is worth the effort.

The origins of this castle are rather obscure but it was probably built sometime between the 12th and 14th centuries.
This view from the west shows the southern side of the castle perched above the precipitous limestone crag on which it is built. You can see just how far down 'ground level' is.

This view is the opposite of the above and is from the east. It shows the Outer Ward with the Chapel Tower at the back. To the right of the Chapel Tower are the remains of the North-East Tower.

This is part of the Inner Ward looking from the south-west corner towards the North-East Tower showing the steps to the Hall.
