Winchester Cathedral (2), Winchester, Hampshire
View through the Flying buttresses from the South-West corner of the West End.
Turning right a short way along this path gives access to yet another lawned part of the cathedral precincts shown in the picture below.

View of the tower from the South-West with the nave to the left showing the flying buttresses. Note the Norman windows, with rounded arches, at the top of the tower.
On the right, under the left-hand edge of the tree is the arch at the end of the South Transept from which the picture on the previous page was taken. This arch gives access to another part of the precincts.

View showing the flying buttresses.
This view, looking towards the West End, is seen from the opposite end of the buttresses to that in the top picture.
Although they look as much a part of the cathedral as any other they were added in 1910 to help stabilise the building

These rather splendid arches are the only remaining part of the original Chapter House. The cathedral Chapter House was the place in which the clergy would meet to discuss their business and duties.
You may notice that here, unlike the lawn outside the West End, there are no people laying about in the sunshine. The explanation for this is that there are small signs around the edge of the lawn saying 'Please keep off the grass'. Simple really!
