Hastings, Sussex

The view from East Hill shows Hastings Old Town in the foreground, the beach, West Hill with part of the cliffs and the newer part of Hastings with the pier beyond.
The buildings in Old Town date back to medieval times as the interesting streets and many fine ancient buildings testify although the Twittens date back to Saxon times. This part of Hastings was the original fishing village which developed into a prosperous fishing port until the harbour silted up.

High Street, in the old town, showing some ancient jettied buildings and a rather high pavement which is only on the west (uphill) side of the street; the buildings on the east (downhill) side being at road level.
This would seem to indicate that these 'banked' pavements are simply a form of 'economic' terracing i.e. they didn't have to cut away as much rock as it would have required to put all the houses level with the road.

This is but one of many ancient timbered buildings in this part of the town showing a fine jettied upper floor.

Part of the castle ruins on West Hill with the modern part of the town, including the pier, beyond. The headland on the horizon in the distance terminates at Beachy Head with Eastbourne somewhere to the right of it.
From the top of West Hill it is possible to walk down into either the modern part of the town, via Castle Hill Road or by using the West Cliff Funicular Railway, or into the old town via various pathways and Twittens (alleyways).
